Our kickstarter project to manufacture our new board game, DOOM AND BLOOM’s SURVIVAL!, is now up and running! What’s that?  Ol’ Dr. Bones and Nurse Amy playing board games?  Yes, it’s true, we’re longtime board game fans, and we wanted to figure out a way to get older kids and others in your family that aren’t in the survival mindset to get involved. So why not a fun and challenging family friendly board game that’s all about scavenging resources, scouting locations, and putting together a group of survivors?

So what’s the deal?

DOOM AND BLOOM™’S SURVIVAL! IS A BOARD GAME FOR 2-4 PLAYERS. IT TAKES PLACE IN A POST-PANDEMIC WORLD WHERE THERE ARE FEW SURVIVORS, ONE OF WHICH IS YOU. YOUR MISSION IS TO HAVE YOUR CHARACTER ACCUMULATE SUPPLIES LIKE FOOD, FUEL, WEAPONS, AND MEDICAL KITS, AS WELL AS SCOUT LOCATIONS THAT MAY SERVE AS A HAVEN IN WHICH TO START OVER.

 YOU BEGIN IN ONCE-PEACEFUL CENTER CITY, NOW CONTROLLED BY RAIDERS OUT TO GET WHAT YOU HAVE. THERE ARE PLENTY OF RESOURCES OUT THERE, BUT YOU HAVE TO GET TO THEM AND SURVIVE VARIOUS ENCOUNTERS AND ATTACKS TO REACH TOWNS THAT HAVE POTENTIAL AS SAFE HAVENS. YOU’LL HAVE TO PLAN YOUR ROUTE TO INCLUDE SPOTS THAT HAVE THE ASSETS YOU’LL NEED TO STOCKPILE.  SOME OF THESE SPOTS ARE CONTROLLED BY RAIDERS, AND YOU’LL HAVE TO SURVIVE ATTACKS TO GAIN THE ITEMS YOU NEED.

 ONCE YOU’VE SCOUTED LOCATIONS, YOU’LL HAVE TO RETURN TO CENTER CITY FOR YOUR FAMILY AND MORE SUPPLIES.  YOU THEN PICK A LOCATION AS YOUR FINAL DESTINATION. IF YOU CAN GET THERE WITH THE REQUIRED SUPPLIES AND SURVIVORS, YOU WIN THE GAME!

We used the talents of Kurt Miller and Josh Cappel, artists and graphic designers that have put together a number of successful board games.  I’ve been told by one person that our female characters are a little “racy” (!?), but we want to attract board gamers that aren’t necessarily preppers (maybe we’ll get a few converts!).  There’s no half-naked characters, however, nor blood and gore, and I think the game has beautiful art that everyone can appreciate. Your base character never dies, so you’re never out of the game in Doom and Bloom’s SURVIVAL!.

THE BIG QUESTION: WHY NO ZOMBIES?

Everybody loves zombies, because they’re so…lovable? So why wouldn’t we put in lots of half-decomposed undead that want to eat your brains?

We set out to provide a realistic survival scenario, and despite numerous TV shows and movies, zombies just don’t exist. Pandemics do.  The pandemic of 1918 wiped out tens of millions around the world, and that was before commercial air travel.  There’s just no “Z” in the word “realistic”.  We wanted to show that we could put together a fun and challenging game that is based on an event that could actually happen.

The game is a great way to promote critical thinking, because you’ll be tempted to use the resources you collect to get an edge in encounter events and raider attacks.  That’s fine, but you  have to balance that with stockpiling the assets you’ll need to win. Each game is different, with different destinations and routes to get to where you need to be.

WHAT IS KICKSTARTER?

Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects. Everything from films, games, and music to art, design, and technology. Kickstarter is full of ambitious, innovative, and imaginative projects that are brought to life through the direct support of others.  For their support, patrons of a project get special rewards for their support.  In our case, they range from a listing in our backer’s page on the game website to special edition patches, posters, and t-shirts, copies of the game from the first batch ever made, and more (depending on the pledge level). Your pledge is not processed unless the project is successful.

BOTTOM LINE

This is one of the first (if not the first) survival board games that is designed by actual survivalists/preppers. The purpose of the game is to increase our community by providing a fun and challenging introduction to the critical thinking that goes into surviving the aftermath of a true long-term survival scenario.  We have enjoyed putting together the game, and we hope you’ll enjoy playing it.
