In this companion video to a previous article, Dr. Joe Alton discusses the methods of water disinfection and why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention consider boiling water to be the most effective way of disinfecting water off the grid. Ol’ Dr. Bones talks about the real standards for boiling water, plus some filters you might consider, and operational security issues when using wood fuel as a heat source.

Fun Fact (or maybe not so much fun if you’re gathering it yourself): It takes a kilogram (2.2 pounds) of wood to boil a liter of water!
