Infectious diseases are a problem in every part of the world, and a common, yet deadly, example is malaria. Malaria was once a major medical issue in the Southern United States; in fact, a 1933 survey found that up to thirty percent of local populations in the Tennessee River Valley were affected. The disease was also common in WWII war zones, mostly in the Pacific. Malaria became such a concern that the CDC (back then, it stood for “Communicable Disease Center”) was established primarily to combat it. Recently, some case of malaria have turned up in Florida and Texas. In this video, Dr. Joe Alton tells you what you need to know about this debilitating and, sometimes, deadly disease.
