Decreases in death rates during childbirth in the last century is an example of the miracle of modern medicine. If a long-term disaster removes the advances made in pregnancy care and childbirth, then the dangers to women could return to 19th century levels. Serious risks included infection, bleeding, and other complications, many of which had few or no therapeutic options for the midwife, doctor, or medic.
